Station 145 Rackheath During WW2

Bristol Beaufighter RNZAF 489 Squadron

In late July 1944 ten Beaufighter aircraft of the Royal New Zealand Air Force attached to Coastal Command arrived unexpectedly at Rackheath. They landed on the field after a mission to Norway, and were weathered in for several days. They remained parked over on the east side of the airfield near the T2 hangar. This example is still carrying a torpedo - - note the "invasion stripes" around the fuselage and wing.
