"Also Ran" Rackheath
Extract from radio-operator Fred Enck's diary:
"No time for radio pre-flight. When airborne
discovered compass defective, could not locate Splasher#5. VHF out, could not contact
formation. Ceiling up to 22,000ft and down to 500ft, became lost. SOS to D/F section got
us a fix and we came in over the field. Visibility very poor, bounced on landing and left
wheel came off. Crash-landed with Six 1000lb GPs aboard. Plane a washout, no one
injured".
Incident occurred to the 791st Lt. Willard Sell crew
