Left to right standing: ?, ?, Douglas Volk (pilot), ?, Aurel Stuart (bombardier), Denny Bram (navigator). One of the original air echelon air crews of the 789th Sq. they regularly flew lead position and participated on the Groups' very first combat mission on 10th April 1944 to Bourges airfield in central France. Co-pilot 2nd Lt. Oliver Snook was tragically killed on the Groups' 8th mission that incidentally the Volk crew were flying as lead crew that day. Killed by flak in the target area over Siracourt, France, 20th April 44, the Group returned to Rackheath without dropping their bombs. The crew continued with lead crew status flying on most occasions with a senior staff officer as Command Pilot throughout the following months. They finished their last mission on August 24th 1944 without further mishap to any of the air crew. |
