29th December44 Crash Debris near Rackheath base 

Perhaps the blackest day at Rackheath; two 790th aircraft crashed on top of one another close to the end of the runway while attempting an instruments departure in thick fog.The entire Lt. Schellhas crew perished while five crew members of the Lt. Foster crew were also killed. See Casualties Page. Two other aircraft also sustained damage in the attempt to get airborne in the fog before Col. Shower scrubbed the mission.
