An early replacement crew who commenced operations in June 44 but ran into misfortune on the crews' 8th mission on 11th July 44. Losing an engine over the target at Munich the crew nursed B24 "Ruth Marie" back toward England with ever lowering fuel remaining. An attempted emergency landing at the airfield of Hardwick saw the B24 finally run out of gas and loss of control causing the ship to crash into a building close to the Control Tower. Sadly two crew were killed in the accident with the majority of others returned to the U.S. for recuperation. Pilot Edwin Lackens recommenced combat with a new crew 7 weeks later while navigator Lt. Curran also was able to resume combat.
