The
S.S.
Frederick Lykes
The ground echelon and some flying crew of the 467th left
Camp Shanks, NY, and boarded the S.S. Frederick Lykes in New York harbour on the evening
of 27th February 44. The next morning the ship left port, and before many hours joined a
convoy for the Atlantic crossing to the UK. Despite engine trouble which necessitated
stopping for 3 hours for repair, the S.S. Lykes, or "Leaks" as it became
affectionately coined, arrived in the Clyde for docking at Glasgow on the 9th March. Next
day trains were boarded for the final destination of the base at Rackheath.
