A Squadron replacement crew, they were involved in the infamous "Fog" mission when four aircraft came to grief attempting to take off in almost zero visibility. Thick fog enveloped the Rackheath base as crews readied for a departure on the 29th December 44. The Moffette crew aircraft struck trees at the end of the runway but was able to climb clear although damaged. The crew abandoned ship safely and were back flying combat missions two weeks later.
