Personnel

Joe Smith, standing second from right Pocatello, Idaho, August 1943. The Base Photo Section one of Joe's earliest assignments in the U.S. Army Air Force.

The "Airliners" were 13 musicians from the base who became one of the most versatile bands in the 8th Air Force. They played weekly at the Aero Club at the Wednesday Dances and further afield at RAF bases, Service Clubs, and halls in nearby towns. They won several awards as can be seen in the photo and provided many hours of musical entertainment for their fellow soldiers. The repetoire of the "Airliners" was extensive, ranging from dreamy waltzes to pulsating jive. They were a major contribution toward the building up and sustaining of morale of the entire base.
