Colonel
Shower's Quarters, Rackheath
Land recently acquired by local Broadland District Council on the former Base accommodation area has led to cutting back of thick undergrowth and revealing what remains of Col. Shower's former quarters, known as, "The White House". The building in 2010 is in poor condition, only one brick thick with concrete render and most of the roof missing it was not expected to last 10 years after first built. Almost all the internal details have disappeared but it is thought there were two offices each with a bedroom, a bath or shower room and lavatory, at one end a small kitchen. Col. James Mahoney shared the quarters upon promotion to Deputy C.O. of the 467th BG. Flue pipes on the wall show that the rooms were heated with a small coke stove. Not pictured, there is a small water tank and piping remaining in the roof area. |
Further view looking toward the right of
Col. Shower's quarters which in effect was a long
narrow building located on Site#6 of the Base. The small kitchen and water tank
were located
in this part of the building.
Internal view of the quarters quite possibly one of the small bedroom accommodation.

(left) and Mrs. Charlotte Shower inspect the internal remains
of Col. Shower's quarters in June 2010. It is not clear whether the Council will
allow the structure to remain
in its current state or it may be pulled down for safety reasons. Either way,
Broadland District Council have
stated the history of the site and the people who lived here during the War will
be respected and remembered.
