Story of the Postage Stamps
The pictured British postage stamps from WW2 were sent by
791st copilot Andy Beasley of the Lt. Rufus Stephens crew.
The crew were shotdown on the May 29th 44 mission to Tutow, northern Germany, and the
aircraft and several crew members came down in the Baltic Sea close to the coast.
Back at Rackheath, upon hearing the aircraft and crew were
initially reported as MIA, the crews personal effects were cleared out and returned to the
U.S. to immediate family. Among those personal effects was the pictured booklet of stamps.
Andy Beasley and six members of the crew survived both the bale out and the remainder of
the War in German POW camps. These British WW2 era postage stamps were returned to England
56 years later.
