Time off in London
“It was funny, we would go down to London, you’d go in a hotel dining room and you would sit down and there would be linen, crystal glassware and silverware, all that stuff. You’d look at the menu and… SPAM! They just didn’t have a whole lot of food. The British people really had it tough for a long time over there. You’d go down in the subways and there would be tiers of bunks really high, so people could go down there during bombings. I was there after the heavy air bombings, but the Germans were still sending over the V-1s and V-2s. The V-1s were a jet propelled rocket, you could hear it coming. When it stopped you got concerned because it was coming down. They were not very accurate. It could come down anywhere in general. Then they started the V-2s which were just rockets, you never heard anything, just wham, they’d hit.”
