Eyewitness Account
A short time after we left the target (still getting flak) I noticed a burst of flak. Within five minutes after the burst we were attacked by fighters. During the attack I had a little trouble with one of my guns. Just after this I saw two chutes about a thousand feet below and back of us. At that time the plane lurched up and to the left. I called the pilot and told him to get into formation. I did not pay much attention to it when he did not answer because everything seemed to be under control. Next the Navigator told him to take a 270 heading, still no answer. The Bombardier then went to the flight deck and found no one there. It is my belief that the two chutes that I saw were that of the four men that left our plane. The Bombardier then notified us of the situation and told us to stand by. The Bombardier and Pilotage Navigator then used the auto-pilot, which the Pilot had set up before leaving the ship. With a 270 heading which they got from the Navigator we managed to get into friendly territory and abandon the plane.
