Eyewitness Acount
The following is a report of the accident that took place on 22 August 1944 about 1625 house between a B-24H No. 224 and another aircraft, unknown at the time. My position at the time of the accident was right back of the two pilot seats and Major Wallace was acting Command Co-Pilot and Lt. J. W. Rice was acting pilot. All that came into my view was a large piece of metal which followed the heavy impact and I was thrown down on the flight deck, disconnecting my inter phone set. I was what had happened and opened up the flight deck doors. After finishing this I went back to the flight deck and as I could not find my inter phone connection stood by for orders. The Major had the ship well under control as I went back to the bomb bay to intercept anyone from the nose that may have decided to bail out without orders. After the nose had been cleared I reported the bomb bay doors were opened and then was given orders to close them as the ship was well under control. Major Wallace then changed seats with Lt. Rice and brought the ship in for a landing.
