Engineering Report - 42-95224 'Lonely Heart'
Engineering Officer of 791st Bomb. Sqdn., 467th Gp.

B-24 aircraft, A.C. Ser No. 42-95224 returned from a practice mission on Tuesday, 22 August 1944, with severe damage apparently resulting from an aerial collision.

I examined the plane to determine the extent of damage and found that the following damage had been done:

a. Nose turret had been sheared off and with it the mounting assembly and turret azimuth track.

b. The nose fuselage skin and longerons were torn and twisted where the turret was torn out and where the object of collision had struck the fuselage.

c. The ammunition tracks to the turret were damaged, the bombsight appeared uninjured.

d. THere were signs of stress at several main fuselage bulkheads. Fuselage skin was wrinkled particularly badly where the right wing leading edge joins the fuselage, and also just below the Co-Pilot's armor plate.

e. Number 3 and 4 engine nacelles were scarred and damaged from flying debris, and no 3 and 4 props were damaged similarly

Our examination of this damage led to the conclusion on my part that the plane should be examined by a representative from Watton to determine the possibility of repairs or necessity of salvage. Lt. Blake, of Watton, examined the plane today and recommended repair. .
