April 45 B24H 42-94931 "Sack Time" Krummel
mission
Dramatic photo portraying the
789th's "Sack Time" shortly after the collision with an
enemy fighter which flew into the starboard fin and rudder
section. If you look closely the damage can be clearly seen.
Tail-gunner Robert Perkins of the Lt. Robert
Winger crew was credited with destroying the Me109 but
it is unclear whether the collision was due to the damaged
fighter losing control or a deliberate act of attempting to
"ram" the B24. The crew maintained control of the aircraft
before baling out safely behind Allied lines on the
continent.
