A replacement crew who flew their first mission in March 45. Participating on the 7th April 45 Krummel mission their ship "Sack Time" was struck by a Messerschmitt Me-109 after Bob Perkins the tail-gunner "hit" the enemy aircraft causing the fighter pilot to lose control of his plane. It flew into the tail section of the B24s twin rudders, shearing off the top half of the right side rudder and vertical stabiliser. In the collision the tail turret was also damaged. Lt. Winger maintained control of the damaged aircraft and returned behind Allied lines in Belgium before the crew abandoned the aircraft. The crew were back at Rackheath within a week. See dramatic photo in Accidents & Mishaps Gallery.
