John Shirk wrote the following after completing his 21st mission, the group’s 202nd...
Twenty first mission - Nordhorn, Germany. Saturday March 24th, 1945. Time 4hrs34min. Target - airfield. Bomb Load - 10x100lb GP = 1000lbs. [other ships carried 52 x 100lb GP bombs]
I think this was one if not the most interesting mission I have ever been on. We were supporting the Rhine crossing. We could see the great smoke screens laid by the army also the airborne landings. We led the 2nd Sqdn on the shortest mission I’ve ever been on. It was also flak free and fighter free. We hit the target and our bombing was rated excellent. Our group flew two missions today. I found out later that Bob Fienberg went down today.
