Mission Narrative
Mission #323 was the second heavy bomber mission by the 8th AF this day. Of the 486 bombers sent by the 8th AF to hit airfields and marshaling yards in France and Belgium, the 2nd BD sent 196 to bomb the Blainville sur Leau and Chalons sur Marne marshaling yards. The 467th BG was part of the 118 B-24's to bomb the marshaling yard at Blaineville sur Leau.
The twenty four aircraft of the Gourp took off, starting at 1527. Twenty of these dropped 238 x 500lb general purpose bombs and 2x100 incendiary bombs in the primary target area. One ship (42-52559 'Miss Fortune')) bombed Verdun with another group (44th BG), and three other ships (42-52565 'Southern Cross', 42-52561 'Squitch/Ruptured Duck' and 41-29375 'Lil Peach') returned early because of various mechanical failures.
The group was lead by Col Shower, but Lt Swearingen’s ship (41-29375 'Lil Peach' with crew #078-R0 of the 791st BS) in which he was flying, left the formation because of a malfunction. Major Wallace, the deputy lead took over flying with Lt Redick on 41-29393 'Shoo Shoo Baby with crew #079-R0 of the 791st BS. The second section was led by Capt. Doenges, who flew with Lt. Lominack on 41-29363 with crew #028-R0 of the 789th BS. The deputy lead of this squadron was Lt. Monefeldt flying 41-29385 'Double Trouble' with crew #032-R0 of the 789th BS.
The results were only fair. The second section placed some bombs on the target, but most of the hits were out of the target area. The flak was light, and no enemy aircraft were encountered.
