Mission Narrative
776 bombers are dispatched to hit airfields and aviation industry targets in Germany on 8th AF mission #306. The 2nd BD sent 248 B24's this day to hit Brandenburg, Rathenow, Cuxhaven, Wittenberge and other targets of opportunity. The 467th BG was a part of the 38 aircraft that hit the Ardo aircraft factory in Brandenburg.
Twenty seven aircraft took off starting at 1040. Of these, twenty three ships released 196 x 100 lb incendiary bombs on the primary target. Two ships that returned early due to engine failures got rid of their bombs in Germany (one dropped on Heligoland, and another jettisoned its bombs into the North Sea). Another plane returned due to a malfunction of the fuel transfer system. One other ship had engine trouble and turned back at the IP.
Lt. Col Shower led the Group on this raid, flying with Lt. Grace, flying 41-29375 'Lil Peach' with crew #077-R0 of the 791st BS. Capt Beatty was in the deputy lead position of the first squadron with Lt. Redick, flying 41-29393 'Shoo Shoo Baby' with crew #079-R0 of the 791st BS. Major Palmer led the second squadron in Lt Monefeldt’s ship, 42-52525 'Six Bits' with crew #032-R0 of the 789th BS. Capt Doenges was in the deputy lead position of this squadron until Lt. McGivern’s ship (41-28731 'Picadilly Lille' and crew #027-R0 of the 789th BS), in which he was riding, turned back just at the enemy coast.
The results were difficult to observe, because the target was clouded over, and no reconnoissance reports revealed the damage. No enemy aircraft were encountered, and meager to moderate flak caused no casualties or losses.
