Mission Narrative
Mission #400 for the 8th AF is a massive effort to isolate German forward elements in the Normandy area. Communication and transportation hubs are the primary targets for 1,178 bombers. Airfields are also bombed to prevent Luftwaffe interference.
538 B-24s of the 2nd BD are dispatched to visually attack several marshalling yards, airfields, and railroad bridges. Targets include Pontaubault, Angers/St Laud, Angers, Le Mans/Arnage, Nantes and Cinq Mars, Dinon, Precey, Cinq Mars, Grandville Harbor, Rennes, and Precey. The 467th BG was a part of a force of 67 to attack the bridge at Pontaubault. This was the second attempt in three days to knock out this key bridge that allowed access to the Brittany Peninsula from the south.
24 aircraft from the group started taking off at 0437. The group formed into two squadrons (13 in the 1st squadron and 12, including the PFF ship, in the 2nd squadron) and led the 'B' Wing which was the last in the Division. Assembly at the briefed location (Splasher 5) was not possible due to weather and was moved (Splasher 10). Assembly was late due to the change.
Two ships were unable to assemble with the Group. 42-52534 'Witchcraft', flown by Lt Reed with crew #062-R0 of the 790th BS, could not find the formation and bombed the target with another Group. 41-29445 'Also Ran', flown by Lt Sell with crew #086-R0 of the 791st BS, had a defective compass and could not locate the formation at the original assembly point. In very poor visibility, 'Also Ran' crash landed back at Rackheath. The plane bounced on the runway causing the left wheel to come off. No one was injured, however, the plane was a loss and subsequently salvaged. One other ship had to turn back after assembly. 44-40070 'Mademoiselle Zig Zig', flown by Lt Evans with crew #058-R0 of the 790th BS, developed a gas leak.
The first Squadron was led by Major Holdredge flying with Lt Campbell on 42-95094 'Leading Lady' with crew #053-R0 of the 790th BS. Deputy Lead for this squadron Lt. Brandon flying with Lt Newhouse on 42-95273 with crew #057-R0 of the 790th BS. Leading the second squadron was Major Palmer flying with Lt Monefeldt on 42-95032 'Silver Chief' with crew #032-R0 of the 789th BS. Deputy Lead for this squadron was Lt Lominack on a PFF ship from another Group.
The target was seen on the bomb run, however, the broken undercast made a visual run impossible. The Group bombed on the PFF ship. from the 458th BG who were leading the Wing, 21 ships from the 467th dropped on target. The results were unobserved. Results turned out to be poor.
No enemy resistance was encountered and no losses were incurred.
