Lt William "Bill" F Moore Memorial Marker

On 29 Apr 44, Lt William F Moore and crew #011-R0 of the 788th BS, departed Rackheath in B-24 42-52506 on the Groups first mission to Berlin. The aircraft was in the Deputy Lead position with Command Pilot Maj. Robert L Salzarulo and Group Bombardier 1st Lt John L Low onboard. Hit by flak over the target, and again after leaving the target area, they lost No.1 engine and were forced to drop out of the Groups formation. Approaching Holland, the aircraft began to lose height as the No 3 engine failed. Lt Moore ordered the crew to abandon the aircraft which then crashed into a farmhouse by Uddel (near Apeldoorn). The crew all landed safely but quite some distance from each other. Five of the crew were able to escaped capture until they made contact with the Dutch Resistance. The other five members of the crew were captured shortly afterwards and made POW.

Lt Moore was one of the members to evade initial capture, however, he was finally captured on 01 Oct 44. He was then taken to the Willem III Kazerne (barracks) in Apeldoorn. In Nov 44 several high ranking members of the Dutch resistance were captured in Utrecht and also sent to Apeldoorn for interrogation (where he refused to give up the names of the those who helped him). In an effort to organize a breakout the Dutch resistance sent two "observers" who were armed and carrying a detailed map of the Barracks. They were apprehended and shot by German guards upon their discovery in a restricted area close to the Barracks. At 0600 on 02 Dec 44 outside the main gates of the Apeldoorn Barracks, as an act of retaliation against this failed attempt to secure the release of the Dutch partisans, twelve Dutchman and Bill Moore were summarily executed by the German SD. Despite Lt Moore pleading he was subject to the Geneva Convention, he was fatally shot several times in the back by the Camp Commandant.

In the early 1960's, a memorial was erected on the spot the execution took place.
